Amputee misconceptions: Recovery ends once you get a prosthesis.

Many people think that receiving a prosthesis is the finish line. In reality, it's just the beginning of a new chapter.

Learning to use a prosthesis takes time, patience, and determination. There are physiotherapy sessions, balance training, strength exercises, and countless adjustments to get the right fit. Even after becoming confident, the journey continues. Our bodies change, sockets need replacing, components require maintenance, and new challenges can arise over the years.

Recovery isn't a destination—it's an ongoing process of adapting, learning, and growing. Every step forward, whether it's walking around the house, returning to work, or completing a 5K, is a milestone worth celebrating. Progress doesn't stop when you receive a prosthesis; it evolves with you.

If you're on this journey, remember that it's okay to have good days and difficult days. Recovery isn't about perfection—it's about continuing to move forward, one step at a time 🧡

Amputee misconceptions: Amputees can't do sports.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

Amputees around the world run marathons, cycle, swim, climb mountains, play football, lift weights, and compete at the highest levels of sport. Others simply enjoy staying active through walks, gym sessions, or recreational sports. The goal isn't to become an elite athlete—it's to move, have fun, and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of being active.

The biggest barriers are often not physical ability, but access to adaptive equipment, coaching, suitable facilities, and opportunities. When those barriers are removed, amputees continue to prove that sport is for everyone.

Whether you're taking your first steps with a prosthesis or training for your next race, remember that your journey is your own. Every achievement, no matter how big or small, is worth celebrating.

What's your favourite sport or activity as an amputee? Share it in the comments and inspire someone who's just starting their journey.

Amputee misconceptions: "A prosthetic leg works just like a real leg."

This is one of the most common misconceptions about limb loss. Modern prosthetic technology has come a long way, but a prosthetic leg is not the same as a biological limb.

Every step requires effort. Prosthetic users have to think about balance, the terrain, socket fit, and comfort. Some days the prosthesis fits perfectly. Other days, changes in temperature, activity, or limb volume can make it uncomfortable or even painful. Walking, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods can require far more energy than most people realise.

A prosthetic leg isn't a replacement for what was lost—it's a tool that helps restore mobility and independence. Behind every confident stride are hours of rehabilitation, practice, determination, and resilience.

If you've ever worn a prosthesis, what's one thing you wish more people understood about using it?

Amputee misconceptions: Losing a limb means losing your independence

One of the biggest misconceptions about limb loss is that an amputee can no longer live an independent life. While losing a limb can bring challenges, it does not mean losing the ability to work, travel, exercise, look after yourself, or follow your dreams.

Independence may look different after amputation. It can mean learning new ways to do everyday tasks, finding the right prosthetic, adapting your environment, and building confidence step by step. With the right support, tools, and determination, many amputees continue to do the things they love and achieve goals they once thought were impossible.

A limb may be missing, but independence, ambition, and the desire to live life fully are still there 💪

What is one thing people have assumed you can’t do because of your amputation?

Limb loss doesn't mean saying goodbye to bike rides. 🚴 Whether you ride for fitness or fun, many lower-limb amputees can cycle again and rediscover the freedom that comes with it.

Some people can ride a standard bicycle, while others benefit from a few adaptations such as clipless pedals, shorter crank arms, a cycling-specific prosthesis, or a professional bike fit. If balance is a concern, adaptive options like tricycles, recumbent bikes, or handcycles can make cycling more comfortable and accessible. The key is finding what works best for you.

Have you returned to cycling after limb loss, or is it something you'd like to try? We'd love to hear about your experience and see your photos!

We’re playing a bit of catch-up—it’s already been two months since our Annual General Meeting back in February!

Our committee met with members to reflect on everything we’ve done over the past year, gather valuable feedback, and start shaping our plans for the year ahead. It was a great opportunity to listen, learn, and grow together as a community.

We’re also happy to share that the current committee was reconfirmed for another term—thank you for your continued trust and support!

Of course, no A4A gathering would be complete without some time to connect. We wrapped up the meeting by socializing over some nibbles, sharing experiences, and enjoying each other’s company.

It’s always a pleasure to catch up with our members, and we’re already looking forward to our next meetup coming soon!

✨ Prosthetics are incredible—they can replace a limb, restore mobility, and help us do things we never thought possible. But even the most advanced prosthetic has its limits.

If you use a prosthetic, what’s one thing you wish your prosthetic could do better?

Let’s share ideas, and maybe even inspire improvement in prosthetic technology and changes in local policies to help everyone access the devices they truly need! 💡

Meet our blade runners, Arielle and Vincenzo. They might have one leg between them, but what they lack in limbs they make up for in grit and perseverance. Being an amputee runner comes with a bucket load of challenges, but these two push through constant setbacks to make their dreams a reality. And that makes them true champions 🏅🦾

🏂 Amputee & Snow Sport – Why Not?!

Did you know that losing a leg (or both) doesn’t have to mean giving up on skiing or snowboarding? With the right gear and mindset, many amputees hit the slopes and love every minute.

Whether you ski standing (with prosthetic + outriggers) or sit in a mono-ski/bi-ski, there are adaptive programmes in Europe designed just for this. From Switzerland to France to the UK, ski schools are equipped with trained instructors, rental gear, and slopes ready for you.
